In lined slipcase. Bound in full Jansenist brown morocco. Spine ribbed with date at foot. Gilt headband. Interior gilt fillet embellished with flowers and mosaic leaves in brown, green and yellow morocco. Cover and spine preserved. Untrimmed. Binding signed Charles Lanoe. Edition with 55 illustrations by Auguste LEROUX, including a portrait-frontispiece and 17 hors texte etchings by E. Decisy, and 37 woodcuts in the text by Clément.
LIMITED EDITION of 1,200 numbered copies. This is one of 20 on Whatman containing 3 states of the etchings (pure etching and before the letter, with remarks, final state).
Copy enriched with :
- the suite of color etchings in register, the 4-state color decomposition of the illustration on p. 94 and a state of the illustrations on p. 106 and p. 162 (unsuccessful attempt at woodcutting by E. Florian),
- a fine ORIGINAL AQUARELLE (16.5 x 11 cm) signed by Auguste Leroux, corresponding to the hors-texte illustration on p. 187, showing Death, a skeleton draped in black, embracing a naked young woman.
