The illustrations by Auguste LEPÈRE mark a date in the history of the modern illustrated book. Printed on the artist's hand press, the work uses for the first time the typeface designed by Georges AURIOL and engraved by Georges PEIGNOT. Carteret considers the work as a "tour de force of typographic printing, for the par- faite realization of the wood in colors".
Lepère's masterpiece and one of the most beautiful books of his time.
