This book was written by the GARZANTI editorial team headed by Giovanni RABONI.

The aim is to describe and analyse the great artistic creations that have appeared from prehistoric times to the present day, thus making available to the widest possible audience a synthesis of the knowledge gathered by historians and critics in this field. All eras, all regions of the world, all disciplines are represented. The body of the book consists of a dictionary of several thousand articles : - biographical and critical notes on artists (painters, architects, sculptors, photographers, but also decorators, goldsmiths, ceramists, cabinetmakers, etc.); - review articles on schools, genres, movements, techniques; - a systematic presentation of the great civilizations of the past, institutions that have marked the history of art, analysis of the relationship between art and economic life. Several appendices complete the dictionary: - a universal chronology; - a panorama of the great architectural creations; - a lexicon of technical terms, which forms a useful reminder of the trade words used elsewhere in the book. The richness of the iconography (more than 1600 documents, mostly in colour) and the multiplicity of cross-references enliven and deepen the reading perspectives".
