Half maroquin blue binding with stripes. Smooth and finely decorated spine, author, title and date gilded, double gilded net bordering the boards, gilded head, illustrated upper cover preserved. Binding by P. Ruban This is a collection of 12 short stories, each illustrated with a woodcut by a different artist, namely Gambard, Jeanniot, Merwart, Le Natur, Adrien Marie, Myrbach, J. Roy, Grasset, Arcos, Renouard, Tirado, Rochegrosse. In addition, there is an illustration of the cover and a frontispiece.

FIRST ILLUSTRIED EDITION, published the same year as the original in-12 .

Exceptional exemplary printed on Japan, with a suite of all the woods on China, and coverage in 3 states. It is enriched by an autograph letter signed by Guy de Maupassant to the editor (written in Châtel-Guyon where the author was staying), by which he informs him that "after long reflections, I believe that the best title to give to our volume is that of the first short story, Clair de Lune. This title does not seem bad to me, especially for an illustrated book.
Enriched also with an autographed letter or ticket signed by each artist (except Tirado), i.e. 11 documents, concerning the illustration they designed for the book. Roy's is illustrated with an ink drawing, and Arcos' with a project to design his illustration.

Ex-libris of La Germonière.

Nice copy.
