FIRST EDITION. Very rare complete set of 3 volumes of the Scientific Documents of the Tilho political-scientific mission, which was intended both to clarify the boundaries between French and English possessions and to study the complete geography between French Niger and Lake Chad.

Complete with 7 fold-out maps in an envelope. This Tilho mission was the first to provide such a comprehensive study: hydrographic, geographical, botanical, etc.

An officer in the colonial infantry who graduated from Saint-Cyr, he immediately went to Africa on various expeditions, where his studies always proved invaluable.

"The scientific and geographical documents collected by the Tilho mission are considerable and of the utmost interest for the study of this entire part of the African continent.

They do not," says Captain Tilho, "constitute a monograph of the regions covered, but they establish a link between similar work already carried out, or likely to be carried out in the future, in the Niger or Chad basins, and initiate a similar link between the Chad and Nile basins. In addition, on certain points, they modified previously accepted opinions and hypotheses, notably concerning the distribution of terrestrial magnetism, the altitude of Chad and the surrounding regions, the probable existence of a low-pressure area around Chad, the geological structure of central Africa, the accuracy of longitudes obtained by measuring time on land using torpedo-boat watches, and so on.

What remained of the mystery which, until the middle of the last century and beyond, still shrouded Chad, has now been completely dispelled."
