From 1888 to 1891, Maurice Barrès publishes the three novels which constitute Le Culte du moi : Sous l'œil des Barbares (1888), Un homme libre (1889), Le Jardin de Bérénice (1891). In this first part of the trilogy, the "hero" tries to free his "Self" from the others - the "barbarians" - who prevent him from being himself.
