"Can you imagine a place that could be a literary salon, a cabaret, a newspaper newsroom and a shadow theatre at the same time? A scoundrel and intellectual place, frequented by all: poets, musicians, painters, songwriters, critics, actors, thugs, clerics, anarchists, oddballers, bourgeois... This place existed from 1881 to 1897, at 84 boulevard de Rochechouart, then at 12 rue Victor-Massé. Hydropaths and Smokers met there, a few Alive, even Naturalists and Amorphs passed by, and strangers and celebrities rubbed shoulders with each other. The atmosphere was noisy, joyful, disrespectful and copiously drunk. For the poets, Le Chat Noir was both a meeting place and a testing ground for their most recent elucubrations. His creation marked the translation of artistic and intellectual life from the Latin Quarter to Montmartre." Andre Velter.
