Beautiful illustrated edition by Henri MATISSE (1869-1954), including an original etching on the frontispiece, printed by Lacourière on China, 2 original compositions on the cover, 69 original drawings, 10 on a full page, and numerous wood-engraved lettertrines culs-de-lampes printed by Théo Schmied, as well as 33 original full page photolithos.
LIMITED EDITED to 320 numbered copies on Rives paper. This one of the 300 copies, here signed by the artist.
In his afterword, the poet Louis Aragon details the history of this work and the artistic approach of Matisse, who, in the summer of 1944, had begun his drawings on lithographic stone for this edition.
In addition to the different types of engraving, Matisse also took care of the typography and layout of this book.
