TYPED MANUSCRIPT WITH CORRECTIONS. 14 typewritten pages extensively annotated with handwritten corrections and additions by Paul-Jean Toulet, in purple ink. These are pages 6, 9, 12, 13, 20, 26, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, and 36 of the pre-print proofs to be published in issue 4 of the journal Les Écrits Nouveaux on February 1, 1918, a text that would be reproduced as is for the original edition published in 1922 by Le Divan (two years after the author’s death). Although Toulet intended to make extensive revisions to his text, his wishes were almost entirely ignored, and virtually no corrections were taken into account. Toulet died in 1920, and the play was not performed for the first time until December 4, 1928, at the Théâtre de Monte-Carlo, despite the text’s favorable reception in Les Écrits Nouveaux, as he indicated to Paul Budry, the magazine’s editor, in a 1918 letter (Gallica): "Vanity aside, I have received compliments that made me want to read it, which one never really does with a manuscript, of course.""

A fine copy
