Summary: "To have everything, to know everything", thinks Étienne Arambour: he is sixteen years old... Life is there, within her reach: women, unknown cities. Everything tempts him, but he doesn't know how to grasp what's available to him. Clumsy and shy, he covets in turn the Mary of Sataïz, little Marie-Lou, the lame one: young girls, cautious or easygoing young women whom he does not know how to deserve. They flee, shirking with indifference or coquetry, and Stephen's impatience turns to despair. Life is there, but he doesn't know how to take it. To his love answers only mockery. The day it all gets easy, it's too late. Étienne is no longer a child, he takes without passion what he has wished for so much. Around Etienne, strange characters evolve: old Sataïz, the Manchota, Eulalie, mute or talkative characters, drunkards, dreamers, immoral, who end up creating a complex drama, by considering life as a dream or a game".

This second novel by Jean Forton is both drama and farce. It has the hard and dense style we liked in The Flight.
