ORIGINAL EDITION of Roger Nimier's first novel, from which no large paper copies were printed, with the "bon achevé d'imprimer" dated August 30, 1948.

A first novel, Les épées is striking for its constant provocation of a France which, at the Liberation, woke up entirely resistant, voluntarily amnesic of a less-than-glorious recent past.

The hero, François Sanders, suffering from an acute form of mal du demi-siècle, joins the militia in spite of himself, after a failed entry into the Resistance. From the height of his contempt, from which nothing escapes - except his sister Claude, whom he loves with an ambiguous love - François goes through the war without glory, aware that he is sinking into a detestable situation.

"I was always isolated because I wasn't interested," he confesses.

Published in 1948, Les Épées spares no one and flays a France won over by Resistantialism. Above all, it marks the entry into literature - through the front door! - of Roger Nimier, a writer who would soon be heralded as the leader of the Hussards literary movement.

Very nice copy
