After Henri Clouard's Alexandre Dumas, who fortunately brought back to light the romantic genius of the great man of the Musketeers and Monte Cristo, here is Mr. André Maurois's book. From its title, Les Trois Dumas, one can see the difference between Maurois' book and Clouard's, which he does not erase, but only completes by taking a different light. Henri Clouard had given all the space to the only Dumas father, Alexander the Great or the One and Only. Maurois presents him flanked by the other two, his father and son, the general and the playwright. Clouard had given the writer the better part. More than the work, it is the man through the novelist that matters to André Maurois, and it is in this sense that he has oriented his painting, in his own way, as a biographer-psychologist. In the end, with all the living documents at his disposal, André Maurois gave his Three Dumas a very fair chance. But the situation remains unchanged. There is always only one that counts, and that is the father, the genial and charming storyteller of the Three Musketeers, who had the most talent and was the most generous. It's all good.
