André Gide took many years to write The Narrow Door, from 1891 to 17 October 1908. He entitled it first of all L'Essai de bien mourir, then La Mort de Mademoiselle Claire. This text was inspired by the solitary death of a friend of his mother's, Anna Shackleton, in 1884. It had first appeared as a pre-original in the first three issues of the Nouvelle Revue française of February 1, March 1 and April 1, 1909.

Very nice copy.
