Poignant account by Blaise Cendrars of his wartime experience, enlisted in the Légion Etrangère, where he was wounded and had his right hand amputated in 1915." Limbs fly in the air. Blood is pouring down my face. Tearful cries are heard. We jump abandoned trenches. We see clusters of corpses, as ignoble as rag-picker's bundles; shell holes, filled to the brim like garbage cans; terrines full of nameless things - juice, meat, clothes and droppings. Then in the corners, behind the bushes, in a sunken path, there are the ridiculous dead, frozen like mummies and doing their little Pompei...".

Enclosed is an autograph bill from Cendrars to Bernard Gheerbrant (1 p. in-8 in blue ink on blue paper, dated April 5, 1958). In it, Cendrars thanks Bernard Gheerbrant and congratulates him on his edition of L'Homme foudroyé published by the Club des Libraires de France.
