Electra and her brother Orestes return to Argos to avenge their father, Agamemnon, murdered by their mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. For Yourcenar, however, "vengeful murder" does not liberate anyone. On the contrary, it brings down the masks and reveals motivations far less noble than divine justice.
