Echecs is the new translation of Stefan Zweig's Schachnovelle, published posthumously in 1943 and better known as The Chess Player. Written between 1938 and 1941 during his exile in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the novel was inspired by Stefan Zweig's own life of solitude, which he satisfied by replaying chess games.
