"Originally, an epigram (from the ancient Greek ἐπίγραμμα / epígramma meaning "inscription") is an inscription, first in prose, then in verse, that was engraved on monuments, statues, tombs and trophies to perpetuate the memory of a hero or event. From the 4th century BC onwards, the epigram became a small piece of poetry on any subject, imitating the inscriptions in its brevity, offering an ingenious or delicate thought expressed with grace and precision. Finally, from the 16th century onwards, the genre specialized in the word spirit: the epigram generally contains a touch of saucy or murderous. The oldest epigrams are only of a practical nature, aimed at identifying the owner or the person dedicating the object. The first author of epigrams, according to Greek tradition, is Simonides of Ceos (Herodotus, VII, 228, 4), who lived at the end of the 6th century B.C. It is from this same period that the first known signed epigram dates; it is a dedication from Ion of Chios to Delphus.
