Summary: "Coming from a ghetto of the Russian Empire, the eponymous hero became rich thanks to his implacability in sometimes dubious financial speculations. He went bankrupt when heart problems forced him to spare himself: at the end of his strength, it was not for himself or his greedy wife, but for their frivolous and selfish daughter, that he left to negotiate an oil contract in the Soviet Union, where he met his end.
