Written in 1936-1939, Cahier d' un retour au pays natal was first published in August 1939, in No. 20 of the review Volontés. At the instigation of André Breton, a first bilingual edition was published by Brentano's, in New York in 1947, then the same year in France by Pierre Bordas in a revised edition. In this Notebook, Aimé Césaire has slipped in many references to his close circle of friends and family, such as when he talks about the rue Paille when there is none in Paris, it is a reference to the rue Paille in Mulhouse which is the birthplace of his literature teacher Mme Masse who made him love reading.
