"After a brilliantly fought war, Gabriel, a disused hero, returns to Vichy to live alone in the bookshop inherited from his parents. The girl he loved before the war got married while he was away. The companions that he discovers, the women who become his mistresses help him to lose himself in a kind of asceticism through debauchery and alcohol. He soon renounced it for true asceticism, the encounter with a curious occultist who was a little crazy having made him sense of the real existence of another world. Through the practice of yoga, he attains to true knowledge. At the height of his deliverance, and at first in a movement of pity, he tries to drag a young girl into it whom his ugliness despairs; then he loves her and tears her away for a time from her desire to kill herself. On the point of leaving for India, a misunderstanding separates them: fatal misunderstanding... A la mémoire d'un Ange is a remarkable novel in which the liveliness of the style only yields to the originality and abundance of ideas. Gabriel Veraldi does not resemble any of the authors of his generation except perhaps by a kind of lucid pessimism. But this pessimism is accompanied by such a strong and brilliant literary temperament, such a "health" that one cannot help but see in this author one of the most promising among the young".
