ORIGINAL EDITION of the very rare third platelet, dated May 1893, published by Francis Jammes, after Six Sonnets in 1891 and Vers in 1892, printed by the same firm. Limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies.
These 21 sonnets, all from the period 1888-1889, were collected by Hubert Crackanthorpe. Jammes was impressed when he met the Crackanthorpe family, Hubert and Leila, both young English authors, while they were vacationing in Orthez in 1889. Jammes dedicated his booklet to Hubert - as well as to the painter Charles Lacoste, whom he had met at high school in Bordeaux - and quoted a verse by Leila alongside one by Keats.
Hubert Crackanthorpe used his entregens to send these Vers de Jammes to Mallarmé, Gide and Henri de Régnier, all of whom congratulated the author from Béarn. Jammes' "literary career" was launched. Sadly, the young English author died tragically in 1896.
"I do not wish to blame or advocate my way, but, what I do affirm is my hatred of schools, my tolerance, my love of truth and my pity of that commonplace, which is the heart of man.
To be true, my heart has spoken like a child."
