Red half-basane posterior binding. Smooth spine decorated with golden fillets. Top edge gilt. Binding signed LEFT. Original paper covers and spine bound in. Very clean interior.
ORIGINAL EDITION of the author's only play written as a vaudeville; it was performed three times in March 1874 at the Théâtre du Vaudeville. The piece turns out to be an obvious failure to the point that Flaubert withdraws it from the poster at the fourth performance under the quibbles of the press and some of his relatives.
