This romantic historical drama by Victor Hugo (1802-1885) set on the banks of the Rhine was premiered at the French Theatre on March 7, 1843. Have been linked in the volume:
- une L. A. S. by Victor Hugo (1 p. in-8° in black ink, dated 21 March 1843 ("in a hurry "), addressed to the actor Beauvallet, who created the role of Job, Heppenheff's burgrave, indicating a new cut (pp. 149-150 of the edition)," no less stupid than the others ". Hugo signs :" his devoted friend and collaborator " ;
- un autograph ticket signed (1 p. in-12 in black ink, undated) by the tragedian Rachel (1821-1858) whose incarnations of the great heroines of Cornelius, Racine... contributed in those same years to the revival of classical theater. It is addressed to François Buloz (1803-1877), founder of La Revue des deux mondes and former administrator of the Comédie-Française in 1847-1848 :
she asked him for a box to go and see Les Burgraves a second time ;
- le portrait-charge of Hugo engraved with etching by Laurent-Jan (1808-1877) illustrating the famous verses :" Hugo looking at the blue vaults / Au seigneur wonders all down / Why the stars have tails / When Les Burgraves do not have any ![
nbsp]". Both return to the alleged failure of the Burgraves (34 performances), which were created in the month when the comet's passage, known as the March Grand Comet (C1843/D1) - it had a double tail ! -It is monogrammed and numbered in pencil (4/12) ;
- le the original copper etching, which has been embedded in the centre of the lining of the first plate of the binding ;
- le leaflet announcing the publication of one of the parodies to which Les Burgraves gave rise :
Les Buses-Graves by M. Tortu Goth, pseudonym of the illustrator and caricaturist Bertall (1820-1882) : 4 pp. printed on daffodil paper and illustrated with vignettes by the same.
