FIRST EDITION. Published on an author's account during the terrible siege of the Parisians in the winter of 1870-1871, its sale was delayed until the following year.

Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) composed these 21 poems under the influence of his love for Mathilde Mauté whom he married on August 11 1870. The poet kept a predilection for this "poor little collection where a whole peaceful heart was put ", as he wrote in his confessions (Works in Prose, p. 510).

Probably because of the context of its publication, Victor Hugo had these words: "It is a flower in a shell. »

Elegant binding.
