Preface by Prosper BLANCHEMIN.

"A popular and childish text, La Friquassée crotestyllonnée is a poem of 716 verses, published in Rouen in 1601 and whose anonymous author is said to have written "à bâtons rompus tout ce qu'il entendu autour de lui". This very rare book is an anthology of rhyming sayings, formulas, nursery rhymes, proverbs, snippets of songs, punctuating the Norman childhood of the 16th century. A true reference of Rabelaisian song, sermonized, sung or paraded, it is served in Old French by a shimmering language, where it is good to eat and drink. Wisely and tastefully commented by two members of a whimsical 19th century academy, this edition offers a perspective on the points of view. The text, supplemented by a critical approach, will largely contribute to raise La Friquassée to the rank of divine buffoonery while introducing contemporary storytellers to ever-popular formulas and songs and poetic inventions of a singular modernity".
