"Bilingual collection of foreign classics."

Translated from the German with a preface by Louis BRUN.

"Taken from the Bavarian chronicle of the 15th century, the drama tells how the heir to the throne secretly married the daughter of a barber, Agnes Bernauer, then how the reigning duke had her drowned, for witchcraft, in order to preserve his estate, and how his son, after rebelling, finally admitted the inhuman reason of state.

By the very nature of the conflict that inspires it, the play is divided between two themes and two styles: on the one hand, the martyrdom of a pure love as unjustly thwarted as that of Romeo and Juliet; on the other, a heroic debate between father and son about the servitudes of power".

In good condition.
