"These verses, composed by Henri Barbusse between his eighteenth and twentieth years, were received with a favour that the world of letters has not lost the memory of. Catulle Mendès, who had known Barbusse only through his verses and who, as he wrote, had "that proud joy of having loved him only after having admired him", greeted at the appearance of Pleureuses, this unknown man to whom he predicted fame, this newcomer "who bore on his forehead the fatal and magnificent sign".

No reprint was made of this collection, which was soon out of print and the first edition is nowhere to be found." (foreword to the 1920 Flammarion reissue)
