Hippolyte Fournier had reviewed Germinal in the March 6, 1885 issue of La Patrie: he described the descriptive part of the novel as " superb ", but criticized Émile Zola for having written " a work of hatred " appealing " to all the evil instincts of the populace ". The author replied, "[he] wanted to be impartial, [he] presented the facts as he saw them. The book is only a warning: we've reached this point, and I believe the catastrophe is fatal if there is no understanding between the classes [...]".
