Success had not yet secured Zola's position, so he had to accept certain compromises. For His Excellency Eugène Rougon, Zola succeeded in finding a buyer, or several buyers, although Jourde, director of Le Siècle, was "very touchy and [got] carried away, when I told him we were worried about his continual postponements. I agreed, moreover, to certain deletions and even to some words of irony [...] I didn't want to miss the point by showing too much stiffness".
