ORIGINAL EDITION of which only 12 large papers were printed (2 Japon and 10 Hollande). This copy on vellum seems to have been printed on a rather strong paper.
A Rebours marks Huysmans' break with naturalism.
The aristocratic Des Esseintes flees the real world to shut himself away in aestheticism and artifice, pushing refinement to the point of neurosis.
