Rare and true first edition. This famous work, one of the most radical in the philosophy of the Enlightenment, well deserves its common name of "the Bible of Materialism". It caused a great scandal when it was published, and was not received favourably, as one might have expected, by all philosophers, still committed to the defence of a sui generis religion. Resolutely atheist, hostile to the half-measure of deism, materialist, mechanist and determinist unrepentant, Holbach (1723-1789), who had borrowed part of his theses from Hobbes, Locke and La Mettrie, managed to shock almost everyone, including Voltaire and Frederic II. The book appeared under the false name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud, bookplate of Mr. Dupleix de Bacquencourt, Councillor of State.
Superb copy.
