"Mathilde Laigle is a French historian of the early 20th century, born on March 24, 1865 and died on May 1, 1950. It is remarkable for several reasons: she is one of the first French women to graduate from American higher education; she is the first to have published a critical edition of Christine de Pisan's Book of the Three Virtues, travelling throughout Europe and its libraries in search of the first editions of the work ; she published an essay on Christine de Pisan's historical and literary background which, in addition to a controversy with Ernest Langlois, has earned her recognition today as one of the pioneers of women's history; finally, she is one of the first French women to have taught at university (in the United States, at Wellesley College) and to have participated in numerous collective works in English. Mathilde Laigle is also a little-known playwright, with plays for children including Une heure au château d'Étupes".
