ORIGINAL EDITION of the current print run of this text dedicated by Barthes to Japan. Enriched with a fine letter from Barthes to Rosabianca Skira, wife of Albert Skira.

"To Mrs. Rosabianca Skira
All my gratitude
for her support - and
her indulgence
in respectful homage
Roland Barthes"

In the same vein as Mythologies, L'Empire des signes divides Barthes's exploration of the Land of the Rising Sun into clearly identified, meaningful segments: politeness, bunraku theater, sukiyaki, pachinko, etc., a whole catalog of brief, seductive impressions, invitations to go and see for oneself. From Japan, we remember Barthes' fascination with haiku, those short poems that are supposed to enclose a whole world, and whose usefulness the Collège de France professor sold as note-taking tools for the great preparation of the novel.
