At the age of sixty, having completed The Origins of Christianity, he begins his History of Israel, based on a study that will occupy his entire life, that of the Old Testament and the Corpus Inscriptionum Semiticarum, published under his direction by the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres from 1881 until his death. The first volume of the History of Israel was published in 1887, the third in 1891, the last two posthumously.
