Red half-marbled binding with corners. Nervous spine. Top edge gilt. Binding signed CHAMPS-STROOBANTS Numerous black illustrations, including 10 double-page colour illustrations, after Meissonier, De Neuville, Detaille, Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Doré and from the collection composed by M. A. Binant.
The Paris headquarters became a pictorial subject. "Paris and its inhabitants are shown heroic and stoic, by their patience, dedication and ability to resist" {...} This heroism restored to Paris a political respectability and dignity soiled by the revolutionary errors of the Commune".
