It was to gather around him the most powerful houses of the kingdom and to attach the main leaders of the Catholic party, in the midst of a religious war, that Henri III created, in December 1578, a new order of chivalry. Dedicated  to the Holy Spirit, in memory of his accession to the thrones of Poland (in 1573), then France (in 1574) on a Pentecost day, the Order became the most famous of the French monarchy. It had 100 members who had to certify three degrees of nobility. It shone brightly under Louis XIV.

Luxurious edition of the statutes of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
