Brown solid-baseback binding. Smooth spine with false nerves, frieze, fleurons, gilt title and author's note. Handwriting on the white guards. Double gilt fillet and cold lace on the covers. Remarkable binding despite some minor rubbing. All edges marbled. Slightly browned paper. Good condition of the contents. Nice copy.
Nice little book with a great story. This novel by Jean-François Marmontel went through many obstacles before it could be published. Rision? the fact that it advocates religious tolerance, a cause ardently fought by the ecclesiastical authorities of the time. To read this book is to understand the ideas of an author - a contemporary of Rousseau - and his refusal to adhere to civil intolerance.
