The novel tells the story of the thwarted love between a young Catholic man (Jezennemours) and a young Protestant woman (Lutheran). At a time when the Edict of Nantes had been revoked (since 1685) and Protestants had not yet regained civil status in France, Mercier uses this fiction to denounce religious fanaticism and intolerance.
